Scholars from anthropology, history, sociology, health policy and cultural and gender studies gathered at this conference in Amsterdam noted the relevance of constituting an association which would provide a much needed forum for interdisciplinary and cross-cultural studies of sexuality.
This conference, jointly hosted by the Universities of Amsterdam and Chicago is considered the origin to the International Association for the Study of Sexuality, Culture and Society, since then biennial conferences take place in alternating regions in the world.
